MSU Tawi-Tawi holds simple recognition ceremony for 7 academic awardees
Seven (7) members of the Graduating Class were honored in a simple ceremony today at the Henry V. Kong Gymnasium as they finished their academic journey with distinction as Cum Laudes of their batch. The Commencement Ceremony for the Graduating Class of 2020 has been indefinitely postponed due to the prohibition on mass gathering. However, the school administration decided to hold a simple ceremony in recognition of the graduates who are academic awardees and to turnover the financial assistance to the remaining students in the university. In her message, Chancellor Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali conveyed her congratulations to the academic awardees for this year. She lamented the missed opportunity to meet the entire graduating class due to the pandemic and challenged them instead to use their achievements in helping the community. COED, UP-ACTRC CONDUCT RESEARCH ON LANGUAGE MATCH AND TEACHER ASSIGNMENT
The College of Education, in partnership with the UP Diliman Assessment, Curriculum and Technology Research Center (ACTRC), conducted a 'BASELINE STUDY ON LANGUAGE MATCH AND TEACHER ASSIGNMENT IN THE BANGSAMORO AUTONOMOUS REGION IN MUSLIM MINDANAO'. The study was conducted in selected elementary schools in the Division of Tawi-Tawi from Feb 10 to March 02, 2020. It was funded by the Education Pathways to Peace in Mindanao. Dr. Wilham M. Hailaya, Dean for Education, served as the regional research coordinator. The baseline study aims to explore the language mapping process implemented by schools to see any forms of match or mismatch that occurs betweern the mother tongue of the child and language of instruction, the language used in instructional materials, the language data in the Learner Information System (LIS), and the assigned/official mother tongue of the school. With an aim to engage students in relevant thinking and inspire them to be profound thinkers, the Social Science Department of the College of Arts and Sciences hosted the first MSU-TCTO Inter-School Debate today at the Henry V. Kong Gymnasium. The team representing MSU-TCTO won as champion followed by the teams from Mahardika Institute of Technology (MIT) and Tawi-Tawi Regional Agricultural College (TRAC), respectively. A team from The Philippine Last Frontier College, Inc. also joined the contest. Motions for debate revolved on topics such as: All Students Should Have an After-School Job Internship; Sexual Education Should be Mandatory in Schools; All People Should Be Vegetarians; and Countries Should Be Isolationists. Fish Processing Dep't conducts 5-day training on post-harvest FishTech
The College of Fisheries hosted a series of workshops on post-harvest fisheries technology with the different schools in Tawi-Tawi. From March 1 to March 6, the workshops were held at the Tandubas School of Fisheries for their faculty and Grade 12 students. As a fellow school for fisheries, the College of Fisheries wishes to promote and share new techniques and ideas on proper procedures in manufacturing fish-based products. The workshops also aims to entice young students to pursue fisheries as a field of specialization in the future. Some of the topics discussed were: a. The University of the Philippines Mindanao, in collaboration with MSU-TCTO's Office of Continuing Education and Extension Services (OCEANeS), conducted a Training-Workshop on Laboratory Techniques and Data Analysis for Fish Biology from February 26 to March 3, 2020 at the OCEANeS Conference Room. The participants on said training-workshop were able to participate in hands-on activities and lectures on Orientation and Datasheet Preparation, Fish Morphometrics and Photography, Tissue Extraction, Otolith and Gonad Extraction, Introduction to Data Analyses used in Otolith Studies, Length Frequency Data Analysis using FiSAT, Age-Length Data Analysis using PAST and Introduction to Gonadal Analysis and Gonadosomatic Index. MSU-TCTO and BRUNEI'S UNISSA SIGN MOU
The Mindanao State University - Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU TCTO) and Brunei Darussalam's Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in the latter's campus. MSU Chancellor Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali and UNISSA Rector Dr. Haji Norarfan Bin Haji Zainal represented the two universities during the MoU signing. The two institutions inked said MOU as they agreed on the collaboration in strengthening MSU TCTO's College of Islamic and Arabic Studies (CIAS) and the pedagogy of Islamic education in Tawi-Tawi, most especially for the fields of Shariah Law and Arabic language teaching. The Language Department of the College of Arts and Sciences hosted the University's 12th Reading Festival on February 22-24, 2020. A Parade of Lights, Float and Community Dance opened this year's reading fest. The theme "On Becoming a Lifelong Reader," focuses on the value of reading in our lives as a means of communication, learning and leisure. Dr. Mona Froida M. ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Simunul LGU and MSU Tawi-Tawi sign MOA, turns over micro-ice plant
Simunul, Tawi-Tawi (February 19) ---- The MSU-TCTO and the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation led the turnover ceremony of the micro-ice plant facility to a fishing community in Simunul, Tawi-Tawi. The ice plant was a commitment of the late philanthropist and Environment Secretary Gina Lopez to the fisherfolk of Simunul as part of the Quest for Love project of MSU-TCTO and Lopez's iLove Foundation. The ice plant would directly benefit the 250 tuna fisherfolk in Brgy. Tonggusung and Brgy. Maruwa in Simunul. Fisherfolk catch yellowfin tuna at the Celebes sea which is more than 10 km away from Simunul. Normally, they have to travel first to Bongao to purchase ice before proceeding to the fishing area. The Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi received a 3-year P57.1M grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science for Change (S4C) - Niche Centers in the Region (NICER) Program to establish the Seaweed Research and Development Center (SeaRDeC). The Center is headed by Dr. Sitti Zayda B. Halun, the Director for Research and Professor at the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science and will be monitored by the DOST Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).
